Umatilla High School held a Talent Show on May 5. Xander, Donovan, Angel, Nancy, Eden, Beatrice and Jonathon made UHS proud as they were all fabulous performers.

The Umatilla School District is considering the adoption of new curriculum for K-12 language arts and English Language Acquisition. The public is invited to review the proposed curriculum. UHS Team Wins Silver at FCCLA State Competition It used to be called Home Ec, a class where students may have learned how to fry an egg, sew on a button and take care of other household chores when they reached adulthood. Now it’s called Family Consumer Science, and the new name is just the beginning of what is different. Holly Nygren is a Family Consumer Science teacher at Umatilla High School. This is her first year teaching at UHS, and she has been busy. Back in August 2021, UHS had their annual Club Tour, where students travel to different classrooms to learn about school organizations they may be interested in joining. Nygren was ready – she talked about FCCLA, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, a national organization that teaches middle and high school students real world skills. Several students were interested and a new chapter was started at UHS, and they have been busy. At Christmastime, they baked cookies and assembled cookie decorating kits for the school’s students – more than 200 kits! They run the Viking Café during sports events, serving up spaghetti, enchiladas and more. Club member Gianna Coleman, junior, said it’s been exciting to work on the projects, “especially running the café, learning the cash register and counting back money.” Coleman and two other students – Skyanne Jacks (junior) and Xander Harsh, (senior) – then turned their attention to preparing for the FCCLA State Competition, which was held in mid-March in Portland. They created a large display board detailing all of their activities so far this year and prepared their presentation. Jacks said the experience was nerve-wracking, especially learning to speak without looking down and with more confidence. Harsh said he enjoyed the competition because “I got to learn new things and got to make new friends while there.” Their hard work paid off, because they won Silver at the state competition, qualifying them to compete at the FCCLA National Competition this summer in San Diego. Nygren, who will accompany the students to nationals, said it has been rewarding to work with the students and see what they have accomplished. “For the first year as a new chapter, they have worked really hard and done some amazing things, and I am proud of them.” FCCLA has more than 155,000 middle and high school members from 4,253 chapters across 47 state associations. FCCLA equips members with real world skills through Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) education by preparing members for careers through its four Career Pathways: Human Services, Hospitality and Tourism, Education and Training and Visual Arts and Design. This afternoon (3/8/2022), after-school hours, we received numerous reports of a former student at Umatilla High School who had released a video of himself with a weapon and a threatening statement. Police were immediately contacted and responded. They confiscated weapons and equipment and trespassed and arrested the student. We appreciate the prompt response from the Umatilla Police Department in this situation. We also appreciate the fast reporting by students and parents of the threat. There is no reason to believe that there are any further threats at this time and school will resume tomorrow with normal operations. La policía fue contactada de inmediato y respondió. Confiscaron armas y equipo, allanaron y arrestaron al estudiante. Agradecemos la pronta respuesta del Departamento de Policía de Umatilla ante esta situación. También apreciamos la rápida denuncia de la amenaza por parte de estudiantes y padres. No hay razón para creer que hay más amenazas en este momento y la escuela se reanudará mañana con operaciones normales.

Today, the Oregon Health Authority announced that mask requirements for schools will cease March 31st, 2022. This means that we will be able to move forward with our original mask-optional plans for the year as we intended for the 2021-22 school year. The information and related requirements/details were just released today. We will work with staff over the next few weeks to finalize our mask optional plans and will have those out for public comment before the April 1st mask-optional implementation date. It is important to note that we’re still required to mask in school settings until April 1st. Please continue your patience with us we work to navigate this ever-changing landscape. We are excited to move forward with mask-optional options but want to make sure we have our plan fully prepared as there are many parts to the shift. UHS Students Focus on Acts of Kindness “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” Umatilla High School students are taking that saying to heart in the next several weeks. The UHS Leadership Class has created a Kindness Campaign that the whole school can get involved in. First, there is a “Give what you can, Take what you need” Kindness Board, where students have two choices – on a small, blank piece of paper, write a kind, motivational or inspirational message and leave it there for someone or take one of the messages others have written. Second is the Motivational Tree, where students can leave heart-shaped messages with positive words and ideas for how to brighten someone else’s day. Some of the examples on the tree already are “Give a teacher a note of thanks” and “Tell someone to have a great day.” There is also a cardboard mailbox where students can write a note praising someone for doing a great job, which Leadership Class students will deliver. Students are also making TikTok kindness videos which will be shared during Advisory, making positive and funny signs to hang around the school and creating a painted rock garden to share kind words and artwork. April Dirksen, Vice Principal at UHS, said the Kindness Campaign is the final project of the semester for the Leadership Class, but also a great way to make this time of year, with its cold weather and stress of the semester ending, a little happier for everyone. So, spread the word, and the kindness.
