The Viking Productions class at Umatilla High School has been very busy in the past few months. The students in the class learn graphic design and production skills; the items they put the designs on include UHS-themed shirts for students and staff, sports teams and more. There are about 20 students enrolled in the class, which has two class periods each day.
The class has produced T-shirts, hoodies, jackets, beanie hats, bags, banners and even wrestling headgear. Recently, they had another large order on which to hone their skills– over 200 shirts for the Umatilla Clash basketball tournament.
Julisa, UHS Senior, is in the class and said she enjoys creating logos and being creative, but says, “I really like the selling part, where someone wants a shirt, I can customize it, ask them about the details and do the actual pressing of the design.”
Alex, UHS Sophomore, is in his second year in Viking Productions, and he has learned enough to start his own small business producing materials. He has purchased his own equipment and is promoting his skills on social media.
Scott Bow is the Viking Productions teacher and said he enjoys seeing students learn different skills that will help them in any job they have in the future. “Being able to organize and manage a large project from start to finish is a valuable skill they are learning,” he said.
UHS students can order Viking merchandise from Viking Productions through the school office.
