The Umatilla School District is proud to congratulate its Crystal Apple Award “Excellence in Education” winners and Legacy Award winners. These outstanding individuals were honored at the Crystal Apple Awards Ceremony organized by the Intermountain Education Service District on May 14th.
The Crystal Apple Award celebrates staff who make our schools wonderful places for students and staff alike to learn and thrive. We are pleased to honor Isabel Cruz, attendance secretary at MHES; Michelle Summerlin, Kindergarten teacher at MHES; Clint Hill, UHS Language Arts teacher; and Melanie Johnston, Instructional Coach at MHES.
Isabel Cruz, an esteemed alumna of Umatilla, is nominated for her exceptional work as attendance secretary at McNary Heights Elementary, demonstrating dedication and proficiency. Her contributions include implementing the "Fab Fridays'' initiative, which significantly improved Friday attendance rates and student engagement. Isabel's excellent record-keeping, organizational skills, and community involvement make her a valued asset, fostering a supportive environment where everyone feels empowered.
Michelle Summerlin is praised for her ability to inspire students to achieve remarkable learning gains and personal growth through a combination of compassion and accountability. She maintains a supportive environment where students feel loved while understanding the consequences of their actions. Michelle's enthusiasm for learning fosters a dynamic classroom where students eagerly engage in activities, demonstrating her commitment to their success through personalized attention and fostering a love for learning.
Clint Hill's dedication and commitment to student success is evident through his involvement both inside and outside the classroom. He goes above and beyond by participating in extracurricular activities such as DJing dances, coaching volleyball, and revitalizing the drama club, demonstrating his care for students' holistic development. Inside the classroom, Mr. Hill engages students with innovative teaching methods, such as incorporating games like a dart board into lesson plans, fostering a lively and enjoyable learning environment that inspires student participation and growth.
Melanie Johnston is a highly regarded instructional coach whose dedication to enhancing teaching practices and student outcomes is evident. She fosters a culture of positivity and encouragement, tackling challenges with a proactive attitude and offering unwavering support to colleagues. Melanie's commitment extends beyond coaching sessions, as she invests significant time in professional development, data analysis, and committee involvement, demonstrating her deep-rooted commitment to student success and overall school improvement.
Each year, the IMESD partners with its school districts to recognize outstanding administrators, teachers, educational assistants and office and building staff for their dedication and commitment to students and for their willingness to go above and beyond their regular duties. Nominations are submitted over a two-month period by administrators, coworkers, parents, students and community members. The winners were selected from these nominations by school district administration.
The Legacy Award honors employees who have served for many years in one school district, have made lasting contributions to district operations, and demonstrated dedication to student success. This year’s Legacy Award winners are Debbie Tesch and Bob Lorence, both of whom began their service in the district in 1991.
Debbie Tesch, who has served as an educational assistant and Office Manager, is known for her unwavering commitment to prioritizing student needs and her consistently positive attitude in all her tasks. Her integral role in Umatilla’s culture has made her a beloved figure within the school community.
Bob Lorence, having held positions as a teacher, vice principal, and principal in Umatilla, is celebrated for his quick wit and care for students and staff alike, and dedication to student success. His contributions have left a lasting impact on the district.
