Top McNary Marathon Winners

Have you heard about the McNary Heights Elementary Marathon?  Each Spring at McNary Heights, students are challenged to walk or run as many laps as they can during their lunch recess. The number of laps run or walked is tracked over the course of two weeks.

Fifth Grade Student Mareli poses with punch cardThe Marathon has taken place each year since the 1980’s, it was started by Mr. Cody. Since its inauguration, the challenge has evolved. Standards for each grade level were developed by Mr. Lind. There is a certain number of laps students should complete before the two-week period ends. The number of laps varies by student grade level. Students can keep track of laps they have walked or run using a punch card. Fifth-grade student Mareli poses with her punch card, we can see she ran 70 laps in total this year. Great job, Mareli!

Prizes are used to incentivize the kids and inspire them to do better each year.  Any student who met their grade’s benchmark received a t-shirt as a prize; students who were the top boy or girl in their class also received a t-shirt. Students who were the boy or girl who ran the most laps in their grade received jackets. Prizes were handed out last week, and our excitement filled the school!
