UMATILLA 11-14, CATLIN GABEL 1-3 — The Vikings improved to 6-2 on the season with a sweep of the visiting Eagles.
In the opener, Umatilla broke open a close game with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the win.
Davis Raymond hit a two-run single for a 5-1 lead, then a walk, hit batter and another walk made it 8-0. Brian Younger-Morris and David Garcia hit back-to-back RBI singles, and Carter Griggs finished the scoring with an RBI fielder’s choice.
Griggs picked up the win, allowing one run on two hits and striking out eight.
In the nightcap, the Vikings led from start to finish and invoked the mercy rule in the fifth inning.
Umatilla scored five runs in the bottom of the first, then added one in the second, five in the third and three in the fourth for good measure.
The Eagles scored all three of their runs in the top of the fourth.
Younger-Morris and Bryce Morris each had a double for the Vikings, while RJ Estrada hit a triple.
Umatilla was limited to seven hits, but took advantage of nine walks, seven wild pitches and five hit batters.
