RIVER VIEW 19, UMATILLA 4 (3) — The Panthers took advantage of six walks and three errors to take a 12-1 lead after the first inning to beat the Vikings in Finley, Washington.

Haidyn Thompson went 2-for-2 with two RBI for the Panthers in the inning.

“We forced a game that Mother Nature really didn’t want us to play,” Umatilla coach Erick Olson said.

The second game was canceled because of rain.

For the Vikings, Kaylonni Schafer went 1-for-2 with a run scored, while Shay McCallister, Sara Wilson and Esperanza Rodriguez-Ruiz all scored runs.

“We are learning how to compete,” Olson said. “We have a big weekend ahead of us with our trip to Seaside. The three games are important, but the team building is just as vital to our season.”

Track and Field 
THE DALLES — Heppner’s Lily Nichols won the 800, 1,500 and 300vhurdles to lead the Mustangs on Friday, March 21, at the Mullen-vLeavitt Invite at the Wahtonka Track.

Nichols also ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay team with HealyvHisler, Riley Archer and Hallee Hisler. Their time of 4:26.14 was 6vseconds faster than the second team.

In the 800, Nichols had a time of 2:34.19, and ran the 1,500 inv5:10.56. In the 300 hurdles, she turned in a time of 52.40, 4 secondsvfaster than the No. 2 runner.

Hallee Hisler also won the 100 (13.07) and 200 (26.76), with HealyvHisler second in the 100 (13.87) and second in the 200 (28.30).

Archer won the 3,000 with a time of 12:01.60 — 23 second ahead ofvAbigail Pope of The Dalles — and was second in the 800 (1:08.90).

Brooklyn Henricks was third in the 3,000 (12:30.07), and Laia Puellesvwas third in the 100 hurdles (19.83).

Umatilla’s Rylee Sanchez won the discus with a toss of 97-2, with teammate Lexi Soriano second at 89-6. Sanchez also was second in the shot put with a mark of 36-6, and eighth in the javelin (79-0).

Also for the Vikings, EvaLynn Campos was third in the 200 (28.91)vand third in the long jump (14-5.5), and the 4x400 relay team ofvCamila Rodriguez-Campos, Yaretzy Garcilazo, Camp and Lesly Tejeda was third with a time of 4:54.44.

In the boys’ division, Umatilla’s Miguel Gutierrez won the discus with a toss of 113-8, and was fifth in the shot put with a heave of 40-7.

Tanner Prindle was second in the 800 (2:12.98) for the Vikings, while Benito Soto was second in the 1,500 (4:44.54), and Jayden Perches was second in the 300 hurdles (44.19).

The Vikings’ 4x400 relay team of Mason Munoz, Atticus Tesch, Pringle and Perches turned in a time of 3:41.59 to win the event. The 4x100 relay team of Larry Sorianio, Munoz, Perches and Tesch was second with a time of 46.78.

Heppner’s Chris Humphreys won the javelin with a toss of 163-8, just a foot better than Joseph’s Gavin Russell. Humphreys also was sixth in the shot put (38-5).

Hayden McMahon was fifth in the 200 (25.44) for the Mustangs, and seventh in the 100 (12.35). Teammate Marty Medina was third in the 1,500 with a PR of 4:44.54, Nick Wenberg was third in the long jump (19-2.25), and Joseph Albitre was fourth in the high jump (5-4).
