UMATILLA 7, PILOT ROCK 4 — The Vikings used timely hitting and a four-run seventh inning to beat the Rockets on the road in the season opener for both teams.
RJ Estrada hit a one-run double in the top of the seventh, and later scored in a single by Carter Monahan. Linkin Zamudio hit a two-run single to finish things off for Umatilla.
After three scoreless innings, the Vikings got on the board in the third on two passed balls and a triple by Brian Younger-Morris.
The Rockets tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run by Krister Litfin, and an RBI double by Carter VanHouten- Chase.
Litfin and Tracen Hamby combined on a sixth hitter, struck out 15 and walked eight for the Rockets.
Carter Griggs and Davis Raymond teamed up to strike out 12, scatter six hits and walk four.
Softball
PILOT ROCK 13, UMATILLA 3 (5) — Sophomore Jada Deist struck out eight and allowed six hits — all singles — as the Rockets beat the Vikings at home in the season opener for both teams.
“We had a lot of first-day nerves that held us back from playing our best,” Umatilla coach Erick Olson said. “Kaylonni Schafer picked up where she left off her junior all-state season, terrorizing defenses at the top of our lineup.”
Schafer had two hits and scored a run, while Sara Wilson also had two hits and scored a run.
Kashley Golden, Hailey Thieme and Kessa Litfin all hit doubles for the Rockets, who scored three runs in the first, and eight in the third to take control of the game.
Girls Tennis
STANFIELD 6, UMATILLA 1 — Kiera Sharp got the Tigers off to a good start with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Dulce Serrano at the Horyna Athletic Complex in Stanfield.
Hope Russell followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Umatilla’s Eden Enkey, and Aylin Gomez beat Briseida Mendoza 8-4.
The Vikings’ lone win came at No. 4 singles, where Jordyn Escamilla beat Judy Ibarra 8-0.
Fresh off the basketball court, Mazie Reeser and Saira Arellano beat Valerie Palomino and Esmeralda Rodriguez 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Sarah Thomas and Julietta Romero followed with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Daniella Lopez and Patricia Oseguera, and Lily Villalobos and Kylee Almonte finished the match with an 8-2 win over Gianna Rodarte and Naeyeli Rodarte.
UMATILLA 3, WESTON-MCEWEN 2 — The host Vikings won three of four singles matches to beat the TigerScots on Monday afternoon.
Dulce Serrano beat Yuli Camargo 8-5, Briseida Mendoza beat Joleen Wolf 8-2, and Jordyn Escamilla beat Wolf 6-4.
W-M’s lone win was Krystal Romero’s 8-4 win over Eden Enkey. The TigerScots also won the only doubles match.
Boys Tennis
STANFIELD BOYS 5, UMATILLA 3 — Alex Angel and Emmanuel Hernandez won singles matches for the Tigers to help them to a home win over the Vikings.
Angel beat Joel Angel 6-1, 6-4, while Hernandez rallied to beat Liam Early 4-6, 6-1, 15-3.
In doubles, Stanfield’s Jesus Arellano and Aaron Sanchez won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1, while Christian Gauchipan and Carter Sharp beat Aaron Vargas and Zander Wall 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2.
The Vikings got two singles wins as Bryan Padilla beat Jonathan Coria 8-2, and Jayden Armenta topped Isaiah Peavy 8-4.
WESTON-MCEWEN 2, UMATILLA 0 — The visiting TigerScots won the only two matches Monday as Trysten Burns beat Joel Angel 8-1, and Jose Barahona topped Liam Early 8-4.
