The McNary Heights Elementary School gym was filled with excitement today, March 7th, as students gathered to witness the school's Battle of the Books Championships. Third, fourth, and fifth graders were invited to watch as the top teams competed for the title.
Battle of the Books is a reading competition that challenges students to read a selection of books and then test their knowledge in a quiz-style format. Participants form teams, strategize, and prepare by reading and discussing the books together. The event follows a double-elimination format, meaning teams compete in rounds and continue battling until they lose twice. This structure ensures that even teams with one loss still have a chance at the championship, but in the end, only one team remains.
This year’s championship, hosted by Mr. Young, came down to an exciting final round between TikTok Riz Party and The Pringles. TikTok Riz Party entered the final battle undefeated, meaning The Pringles would have needed to beat them twice to claim the title. However, TikTok Riz Party competed well, and secured the victory, finishing the tournament without a single loss.
As champions, TikTok Riz Party, a fourth-grade team from Mrs. Gust’s class, was awarded medals and a $25 certificate for Scholastic book orders. The Pringles, finishing in second place, earned medals and a $20 certificate, while third-place team The Gamers was also recognized, receiving medals and a $15 certificate for their efforts.
After their victory, members of TikTok Riz Party admitted they were surprised to win. They originally joined the competition for fun and never expected to take first place. More than anything, they enjoyed competing as a team.
As the newly crowned champions, the team will now represent McNary Heights at the regional Battle of the Books competition tomorrow, March 8th, at West Park in Hermiston. Best of luck to the team as they take on this next challenge!
