BURNS — Burns took the lead with 7 seconds left on the clock, and held on for a 51-49 victory over Umatilla on Wednesday, Feb. 19, in the first round of the Eastern Oregon League district tournament.
The Hilanders (19-6) will play at Riverside for the district title. The date and time have not been announced.
The ninth-ranked Vikings (19-6) now wait to see how they fit into the 3A state bracket. Umatilla led 38-34 heading into the fourth quarter, where the Hilanders went on a 17-11 run to eke out the win. Burns went 5-for-8 from the free-throw line in the quarter.
Each team scored 10 points in the first quarter, and the Hilanders took a 21-19 lead at the half behind 10 points from Carson Volle.
The Vikings, behind eight points from Micheal Montez, went on a 19-13 run in the third quarter for a slim lead heading into the fourth.
Montez led the Vikings with 20 points, while Carter Monahan had eight points and, and Mike McGee seven points and 14 rebounds.
Girls Basketball
BURNS 51, UMATILLA 41 — The Hilanders ran out to an early lead and never let up in beating the Vikings in the first round of the Eastern Oregon League district tournament.
The Vikings (14-10), who had their most successful season in five years, won seven of their first nine games and finished 6-4 in league play.
“This season was one for the books for us as a coaching staff and the girls,” Umatilla coach Marisa Gonzalez said. “They worked hard in the offseason and it showed. We are very proud of them.”
Burns (18-6) took a 22-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, and expanded its lead to 37-19 at the half.
A 19-4 run in the third quarter put the Hilanders on top 46-23, but the Vikings pulled with 10 with an 18-5 scoring spree in the fourth quarter.
Alyssa Bow led the Vikings with 13 points, while Shay McCallister had 11 and Alyiah Howard 10.
Akylah Kaino had 15 points to lead the Hilanders, who will play at Vale on Friday for the district title. Skyla Samples added 11 points, while Addie Robbins had 10.
