Boys Basketball
UMATILLA 71, VALE 44 — Micheal Montez had a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds to lead Umatilla to an Eastern Oregon League road win over Vale.
Umatilla (18-4) improved to 6-2 in league play, and trails Riverside by one game.
Vale opened the game with a 17-14 lead in the first quarter, but Umatilla bounced back with a 27-4 run in the second quarter for a commanding 41-21 lead at the half. Montez had 16 of his points in the second quarter.
David Garcia scored nine of his 16 points in the third quarter as Umatilla’s lead ballooned to 59-33.
Atticus Tesch scored all five of his points in the fourth quarter to lead a 12-11 run by Umatilla.
Mike McGee added 10 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots for Umatilla, while Carter Monahan added nine rebounds and eight assists and three steals.
“Mike has been very dominant on the rebounds,” Umatilla coach Scott Bow said. “He is able to jump with anyone and does a great job of putting himself in great position.”
Cal Johnson led Vale (6-13, 0-7) with 15 points, while Canon Hiatt and Damick Eddy each added 10.
Girls Basketball
VALE 63, UMATILLA 17 — Vale ran its win streak to 15 games with an Eastern Oregon League home win over Umatilla.
Third-ranked Vale (19-1 overall, 7-0 EOL) wasted no time in taking the reins of the game, leading 22-2 after the first quarter, and 44-4 at the half.
Umatilla outscored Vale 12-11 in third, but it didn’t even make a dent in Vale’s lead.
EvaLynn Campos and Shay McCallister each had four points to lead Umatilla (12-9, 4-4).
Vale, which continued to play its starters in the fourth quarter, got 19 points from Elli Jacobs, while Brynlee Hartley and Kesley Stepleton each added 10.
Girls Wrestling
Riverside crowned six champions and ran away with the team title at the Stakes Landing Invitational at Irrigon High School.
The Pirates won the title with 97 points, while Irrigon (42) was second, Elgin (37) was fourth, Echo (18) sixth, Umatilla (12) eighth, Heppner (10) ninth, Pendleton (10) ninth and Union (9.5) was 11th.
Mayte Pacheco got the ball rolling for Riverside, winning both of her matches by fall for the 106-pound title.
Adalia Chavez followed with a title at 110, winning all four of her matches in the round-robin format by fall.
At 130, Megan Wiseman won both of her matches by fall to claim the title.
Katelyn Wiseman followed at 135, winning two matches by fall and one by technical fall to earn the gold.
Juliah Williams won gold at 145, winning both of her matches by fall. In her first match with Audrey Justice of Estacada, Williams needed just 18 seconds to record the win.
Rebecca Wiltberger put in a long day with four matches, all won by fall, to take the title.
Also for the Pirates, Leiliana Lissman was second at 110, winning three of her four matches, while Jamie Torres was fourth at 115, and Allie Schuler was fourth at 125.
Irrigon’s Roxy Solis won the 120-pound title, winning two of her matches by fall, and one by decision.
Also for the Knights, Lexi Flores was second at 125, winning her first three matches before dropping her last match to Averi Fisher of Echo.
Sara Akers was second at 145, Cinthia Madrigal was second at 235, and Emma Macomber was fourth at 120.
Fisher was Echo’s lone entrant, but she came away with the 125-pound title with three pins and forfeit to improve to 26-6 on the year.
Elgin saw Bailey Hasbell win the 155-pound title, winning both of her matches by fall. Also for the Huskies, Amber George was second at 120, and Jacie Lathrop was second at 135.
Heppner saw Loren Trujillo (115) and Emillia Cavan-Harris (140) place third, while Sarah Munkers was fourth at 170.
Pendleton’s Destiny Cerda (130) and Kamryn Kauffman (170) each placed third, while Jayda Preston (110) was fourth and Maura McShane (115) was fifth.
Umatilla’s Shanie Thomas finished second at 170, recording two pins and a forfeit before getting pinned by Riverside’s Wiltberger.
Union’s Kari Stockhoff finished second at 115, winning her first three matches before getting pinned by Enterprise’s Talluah April. Also for the Bobcats, Aurora Shearer was second at 100, Sofia Marcia was fifth at 125, and Hailey Wright was fifth at 170.
