RIVERSIDE 4, UMATILLA 0 — The Vikings held the Pirates to one goal in the first half, but Riverside put three balls in the net in the second half for a Special District road win. Arturo Murguia, Juan Flores, Jose Flores and Rigo Cuevas all scored goals for the Pirates (8-4 overall, 6-1 SD6), who ran their win streak to five games. Hector Magallanes stopped the only shot he faced, while Christian Cuevas played 8 minutes with zero saves. “It was a very good game, taking into consideration that for various reasons I had to use many ninth graders,” Umatilla coach Pedro Ortiz said. Abrahan Garcia finished with four saves for the Vikings (4-4-2, 3-3-1).

Girls soccer
RIVERSIDE 1, UMATILLA 0 — Leslie Gonzalez scored the only goal the Pirates needed in their Special District 5 road win over the Vikings. “It was a really good game,” Riverside coach Yvonne Torres said. “The girls played really hard and fought for the ball the entire game.” Deisy Zavala had eight saves in the game before suffering an injury in the second half. Tyana Nuñez finished the game and posted five saves. The Pirates (5-3-1 SD5) will play Tuesday at Grant Union, while the Vikings (4-5) will play Tuesday at McLoughlin.

Cross country
For the second year in a row, Heppner’s Lily Nichols won the Mustang Invite at Thompson Ranch. Nichols turned in a time of 20 minutes, 52.6 seconds over the 5,000-meter course to help lead Heppner to the girl’s team title with 25 points. Riley Archer placed fourth for the Mustangs with a time of 21:54.10, followed by Brooklyn Hendricks (5th, 22:06.60), Hailey McDaniel (7th, 22:49.50), and Laia Puelles (14th, 25:42.50). The Dalles was second in the team scoring with 34 points, while Umatilla was third (81) and Riverside fourth (84). Pilot Rock freshman Hailey Severe finished 11th overall with a personal best time of 25:21.40. Leiliana Lissman led Riverside with an eighth-place finish with a time of 23:54.50. Rounding out the Pirates were Caelyn Pullen (17th, 27:33.20), Valeria Rodriguez (26th, 33:27.80), Samantha Torres (37.231.70) and Isabel Sanchez (29th, 38:40). Umatilla was led by Eden Enkey (15th, 25:56.90), followed by Emme Prindle (18th, 27:44.80), Brooke Gerard (20th, 28:03.10), Meghan Owens (23rd, 31:13.30) and Sarah Hill (25th, 33:07.30). Nixyaawii had three runners on the course, led by Rosaella Salt (21st, 29:43.90). She was followed by Emma Star-Nez (24th, 32:35.70) and Ayanna Star (27th, 35:00.10). Echo-Stanfield’s lone runner was Clarice Thomas, who finished 22nd in a time of 30:09.60. In the boys’ race, Riverside took the top three spots and won the team title with 30 points. Nixyaawii was a distant second with 81 points, with Umatilla fourth (110), and Pilot Rock seventh (132). Nathen Hammond won the race with a time of 17:25.30, followed by teammates Ethan Beaty (2nd, 17:44.70) and Eric Pullen (3rd, 18:04.70). Rounding out the scoring for Riverside were Jaime Calvillo (8th, 18:53.50) and Michael Harris (25th, 21:25.70). The Golden Eagles were led by sophomore Sun Schimmel, who finished seventh with a season-best time of 18:49.80. Rounding out the scoring for Nixyaawii were Sacas Wildbill (13th, 19:36.60), Noah Piercen (19th, 20:43.20), Weptas Brockie (34th, 22:11.20) and Ellis Ashley (37th, 22:49). Umatilla’s Tanner Prindle led the Vikings with a fifth-place finish with a time of 18:18.20. He was followed by Atticus Tesch (17th, 20:16.70), Noah Castro (30th, 21:46.8), Alexander Ortiz (45th, 24:04.30) and Liam Early (47th, 25:15.30). Stanfield/Echo placed all four of their runners in the top 15, but fell one runner short of vying for the team title. Jack Sperr led the Tigers, placing fifth with a time of 18:18.20. He was followed by Landon Bailey (9th, 19:04.30), Jeremiah Swanston (10th, 19:04.60) and Andrew Thurman (15th, 20:02.30). Pilot Rock was led by Carter Ford (11th, 19:15.50). He was joined by Lewis Hansen (32nd, 21:53.60), Ayden Hoeft (40th, 22:54.40), Landon Norton (43rd, 23:53.50) and Elisha Sanchez (48th, 25:20.70). Host Heppner had four men in the race, led by sophomore Jake Wilson (4th, 18:06.30). Also running for the Mustangs were Walker Lathrop (22nd, 21:15.50), Kaden Hall (33rd, 22:04.90) and Olson Anderson (39th, 22:53.80). Irrigon also had a skeleton crew, with Ilan Felipe (27th, 21:37.50) the lone representative for the Knights.
