On September 27th, 2024, McNary Heights Elementary School (MHES) received a special visit from the family of former 3rd-grade teacher, Jordan Bennett. Jordan, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and sadly passed away on June 3rd, 2023, was a beloved 3rd-grade teacher at MHES remembered for her passion for education and her unwavering commitment to her students.
In her honor, Jordan’s family established the Jordan Bennett Legacy Foundation. Through this foundation, they continue her dream of supporting children’s success by giving back to students in the community. As part of their ongoing efforts, Jordan’s parents, Debby and Brian Bennett, visited McNary Heights Elementary to present each 3rd-grade student with a book to take home and keep—spreading the love for learning that was so central to Jordan’s life and career. This was the foundation’s first giveaway of the year, and the students were thrilled to receive their very own book, eager to write their names inside and share with friends. Each book was stamped with a message, letting students know it was a gift from the foundation in Jordan’s honor.
The foundation aims to visit McNary Heights three times a year to give books to third graders. This marks the second year the foundation has visited MHES. Last year, they made two visits—one during Christmas, when every student received the same book, and another in the spring, where each classroom selected a personalized book for their students.
Beyond their work with young students, the foundation also supports a cause close to Jordan’s heart—softball. Having grown up playing softball and later coaching at Umatilla High School, Jordan’s love for the sport lives on through the foundation’s annual scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to softball players at Umatilla High School and other surrounding areas to assist with post-education expenses. The foundation also provides financial support to players in need of essential equipment, such as cleats and mitts, ensuring that all athletes have the opportunity to participate regardless of their financial situation.
The Jordan Bennett Legacy Foundation is a beautiful way to honor Jordan’s love for education and athletics. We are grateful to her family for keeping her dream alive and supporting our community.
